We have two market garden worker positions available at $18/hr for 8 weeks. These positions are funded by Canada Summer Jobs, for students aged 15-30.  The work week is 35 hours: 7 hours per day, Tuesday to Saturday.  Work hours are 8AM to 3PM.  See details below.

Market Gardener Worker

Two positions are available for garden worker trainees. The positions require no previous knowledge or experience in gardening (including how to work safely in the garden or in the greenhouse and around machinery that is active in the garden), just enthusiasm for learning and working outdoors for eight weeks of summer.

The garden workers will work under the supervision of the Garden Manager as part of a team performing tasks in the garden and greenhouse. The Garden Manager will assign tasks, instruct garden procedures, and demonstrate required safety equipment. The tasks will be directly supervised with an objective to enable working with minimum supervision.

 

The garden workers will record their daily hours, adhere to safety requirements, be aware of hazards posted in the Garden’s Safety Hazard List, wear suitable work clothing, use personal protective devices in the garden, use safety equipment associated with particular tasks, and bring newly identified safety issues to the attention of the Garden Manager or Safety Officer.

 

The garden workers will become knowledgeable of and abide by the SLCG Health and Safety policies/procedures (includes WHMIS, communicable infections, harassment, discrimination), and will successfully complete the prescribed courses prescribed in the SLCG Policy and Procedures manual.

 

The garden workers will meet weekly for informal reviews with the Garden Manager and separately with the Garden Mentor to review performance and developmental opportunities and to identify difficulties and their resolution.

 

The following tasks will vary with the growing season:

  • garden planting: greenhouse seed germination processes, greenhouse growing/production of seedlings, field bed preparation, direct planting of seeds, use of seeding equipment, transplanting seedlings, care of garden beds (weeding, hoeing, thinning of plants, staking, harvesting)

  • application of mulches, including straw or plastic ground covers, (with explanation of their use, care and management)

  • monitoring and maintenance of plants, rogueing weeds, scouting watering needs, disease, infestations, training and pruning of plants, plant removal after harvest and bed preparation for successive plantings or regeneration

  • seeding with green manures for nutrient regeneration

  • seed saving processes, identification, recording, pollination control, and tagging of produce allowed to mature for seed purposes

  • harvesting of produce: washing, weighing, recording of produce weights, and boxing of produce for distribution or placement at the public produce stand

  • assisting at a public produce stand at the garden including setup of the stand, recordkeeping, stocking with fresh produce, and interacting with volunteers and the public

  • providing assistance to members of the public and volunteers coming to the garden, assisting volunteers in removing produce from the garden for their personal use or for donation to partner agencies,

  • assist with the installation and modification of the irrigation system, assist with repairs, care and handling of the system; comply with safety precautions while working around the system when it is operating.

  • mentoring and assisting members of special youth groups who may come to the garden to learn about the garden

 

The following qualifications are considered assets:

  • experience in home gardens

  • leadership training

  • certificates for food safety/food handler, occupational health and safety worker, WHMIS, AODA, workplace violence/harassment

  • driver’s license
